Our Role

We believe that every student capable of finishing their education, and willing to do the work, should get the chance to—regardless of what family or circumstance they were born into.

Schools provide instruction. Families do everything within their power. Governments across Tanzania and much of East Africa have expanded access at the primary level further than seemed possible twenty years ago. But secondary school, vocational training, and university remain out of reach for many capable students—not because of ability, but because of the cost of simply staying enrolled: fees, transport, meals, and supplies.

That’s where we come in.

UNTA is dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and expanding opportunities for gifted and financially disadvantaged students. We foster meaningful dialogue between Americans and Tanzanians and support communities in achieving their personal and professional goals.  

How We Work

We connect sponsors directly to students who need that specific gap closed—funding tuition, supplies, meals, and transport, and pairing every student with a coordinator on the ground who knows their family, their school, and their progress firsthand. We don’t operate through distant program officers or general funds. We operate through direct, verified relationships, because that’s the only way to guarantee every gift closes the specific gap it was given for.

Our students are recognized leaders, enthusiastic learners, and committed to becoming contributing members of society. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and financial need, equipping young people with the tools to make informed, healthy choices about their future, whether in secondary school, university, or vocational training.  

In addition, UNTA facilitates international student letter exchanges, open to students from elementary through high school. This creative program encourages cultural awareness, connection, and the sharing of ideas—independent of sponsorship participation.  

Our Ambition

Our ambition is not to stay small. It’s to do as much as possible, for as many students as possible—expanding education access, supporting the teachers and schools already doing this work, and helping students carry what they’ve learned into real opportunity after graduation. We grow by replicating what already works—the same direct relationships, the same verified funding—rather than diluting it. Because when a student gets the chance to finish their education, the benefit doesn't stop with them.

What Our Work Looks Like

Our work centers on direct student sponsorship, community outreach, and support for the schools and teachers already on the ground. We proudly partner with families, local coordinators, and institutions across Tanga who are relentlessly supporting their students' potential.
